Spreading risk across political spectrum - the IPL way

Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel are old hands in politics and know the ways of getting out of trouble. They can take care of their interest in one way or the other as far as their "cricketing" interests are concerned. There is Rajiv Shukla Congress MP who is now acting like a saint. He has been through the thick and thin with BCCI for years now and it sounds funny when he says that he does not know anything. He will also survive as he is a veteran.

There is Arun Jaitley, the President of Delhi Cricket Association. With his stature and reach, it looks odd that he is keeping quiet. I get a feeling that he is also covered and has some interest. There would be many more in various State cricket associations who have benefited by their "interest " in cricket.

The others like Shashank Manohar and Lalit Modi are also keen to have politicians around as there is safety in numbers and the spread of politicians across various parties with "interest" in cricket also ensures that leading political parties do not go overboard on criticism as it would turn out to be a case of pot calling kettle back.

Shashi Tharoor is a new kid off the block in Indian politics. His long tenure with UN has earned him international contacts but he is a novice in national politics and there could be heart burns that he has made it to the ministry, albeit as a junior minister, in his first stint in the parliament. His entry into national politics seems to have been offered on a platter.

As in all jobs there is a probation period in politics too where Shashi Tharoor would have had to earn his spurs so that he could spread his area of activity. Unfortunately he dared to put his hand into the cookie jar too early before his probation period ended. How could he jump the queue in the gravy train ? I feel this is what has landed Shashi Tharoor in a mess. If he had waited for a couple of years and tried his hand in showing "interest" in cricket, he could have got what he wanted and rubbed shoulders with the crowd in power in cricket world. But he rushed in too early and paid the price.

  2. Tharoor did not wait till he put on weight and grew into a large fish. As with everything to do with IPL, it is all fishy !
